Kusadasi Pergamon Asklepion Tour

  Last Updated: April 18, 2024

This private tour gives you the chance to visit the antique site of Pergamon. Of immense importance in ancient times, and probably underestimated in the history of the medical world, Pergamon was founded in the Stone and Bronze ages, and grew to be a major player in the then known world, it became a centre for medical treatments and development throughout these years. Hippoocrates and Galinus were born and worked here. To give you an idea of how important this city and its famous inhabitants were, Doctors still repeat the Hippocratic oath to this day, when they graduate from medical school.

You will have the opportunity to see the Asklepion which is the hospital itself, where they taught and worked, overlooking the ancient site and vast in size, its importance becomes instantly recognisable. With many things of interest in this place, such as the Altar to Zeus at the top of the acropolis (and yes, if it looks familiar, that will be because it is modelled on the same Athenian acropolis). The library of Celsus in Ephesus , is famed as one of the greatest in the ancient world, but Pergamon has that beaten too! The Athenaum Library once held an astounding 200,000 volumes and was indeed the largest library in ancient times. It was given as a wedding gift to Cleopatra, no less, by her husband, Mark Anthony.
