Fethiye Market Tour

  Last Updated: July 7, 2024

Fethiye market tour is a 7-hour excursion to make some shopping from local bazaar and to visit Kayaköy village.

Fethiye is not just a city with beaches. There’s plenty to see and explore around it and inside. We suggest you take one of the most unusual tours of the Fethiye region, a tour of the ghost village of Kayaköy and the town market.

Kayaköy Village (Greek: Livissi) is a former Greek settlement, which existed and prospered peacefully during and under the Ottoman Empire. But with its fall and the change of power, the Greeks of Turkey had a hard time, many of them died in the early 20th century, others were expelled in the 1920s. At the same time, the Turks who migrated from Greece to Turkey did not want to settle in Livissi because of rumours about ghosts that filled the area. Since then, the Greek village, with its numerous houses and churches, has stood abandoned, partly destroyed by earthquakes and weather.

The atmosphere in this place is unbelievable. Tourists from all over the world come here every day. Market. How can you be in Turkey without bargaining at the local markets? In fact, it is part of the Turkish culture. Moreover the markets in Turkey are the place where you can find anything you like, especially food, fruits and vegetables which are always fresh and fragrant.

On this tour you will visit the Fethiye market, we are sure you will love it. You will have a professional English-speaking guide with you all day long and he will tell you more about the history of the places and the culture of the area. The price of the guiding as well as both transfers (morning from hotel and evening return) and lunch are included in the price of your ticket. The tour takes place every Tuesday and we recommend that you book in advance.

A visit to the market will ignite your five senses.  There is an array of colours to behold and a plethora of smells wafting from the spice section will leave your olfactory feeling aroused.  There are silks to softly touch and the calls of the marketers will often make you smile as they practise their English.  Of course there is also plenty of ‘street food’ available to awaken your taste buds and give you the ultimate market experience.  People from all around the area visit the Fethiye market and love to explore the hundreds of stalls and the products that they have to offer.

The market takes place out of direct sun underneath canopies and shades.  Here you will find many local wares from locally produced dairy products to handpicked olives famous in the region.  There will be a choice of seasonal fruit and vegetables most of which is organic and locally grown.

There is an area of the marketplace dedicated to textiles and here you will find luxurious fabrics and silks as well as bathrobes and hamam style towels known as ‘peshtemals’.  Of course you will also find your clothes, handbags and belts in this section and with many a well known brand on offer albeit counterfeit, you are sure to find a bargain.

Haggling is all part of the buying process and while it is disappearing slowly in resort towns it is still very much alive and even expected in markets around the country.  As a rule of thumb you should first think of what the item is worth to you and stick to that price.  An opening price of around 30% lower than the asking price is a good place to start and then the fun can begin.  It is worth noting that it is easier to haggle if you are willing to take a few items from the same seller.

Q&A

How much is Fethiye Market Tour?

Cost of Fethiye Market Tour is 25 € for adults, 20 € for children between age 7 and 12, free for children under 6 years old in 2024.

What is best to take with me?

You should keep your belongings light as you are sure to have a lot of purchases to carry at least as far as your transfer vehicle.  You will only need your shopping money.  It is a good idea to spread this about your person due to pickpockets and of course it will help when haggling!

Are there pickpockets operating in the market?

Whilst pick pocketing is much rarer than in most European markets there is still a need for care.  You should take care anywhere in resort and this is no different in the market itself.

Do I have to haggle? Is it rude to haggle?

Bartering for goods has been a part of Turkey’s culture for hundreds of years and this doesn’t originate in tourism.  Locals will almost always ask for ‘the lowest price’ and haggling is very much a way of life.  That said, there are a few unwritten rules that you should follow.  You should be polite at all times and if you are unhappy with a price simply walking away is enough.

Do you get loads of hassle in the market?

You should expect to be engaged by the sellers as they are trying to sell. For the most part you will encounter friendly banter and a simple but firm ‘no thank you’ is usually enough to deter the most determined sellers.
